Save the Pangolins 53 images Created 4 Jul 2017
Wild Wonders of China sent out three experts to photograph pangolins, the world’s only scaly mammals. Mythologically known as "Guardians of the forest", probably because they protect forests from termite infestations. Pangolins are today on the verge of extinction due to habitat loss, illegal trade and poaching. That is also the reason why these photographs were all taken in captive conditions, in a breeding centre, a zoo and a reintroduction centre. All these animals, from three species, were confiscated in the illegal trade. More than a million pangolins have been killed over the last 10 years. All eight species are now listed under Appendix I (Threatened with Extinction) in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
